A ‘design sprint’ is the result of reflection on a few hundred innovation processes by Google Ventures; it is a blend of the best innovations and co-creation processes in a dense process. It is a mix of business model design, behavioural science, trend watching and design thinking combined in a short period, mostly 5 days of continuous work with a small team. The advantages of design sprints are: the time constraints put pressure on output instead of debate, there are a lot of ideas and fast iterations on ideas to develop prototypes, and user tests are a feature.
The Antwerp citylab2050 used design sprints with two projects: the first was the challenge of what the design of a ‘garden street’ could look like. The second was the redevelopment of an area against flooding with green and blue infrastructures, taking recreation, historical background and economic activities into account.
