Water neutral area development, location choice and use of geomorphology

The soil structure and composition have a major influence on groundwater flows. By using these characteristics in the planning of areas, rainwater can better infiltrate and/or groundwater can better be retained in the area. Retaining fresh groundwater makes an important contribution to combating salinization in coastal areas and also to preventing subsidence. The optimum is when the natural water balance is disturbed as little as possible, both vertically and horizontally, by building on and arranging areas. This measure also helps to limit flooding. Hanover Kronsberg was designed according to this principle.
