Planting trees on streets, squares and car parks creates shade and evapotranspiration and therefore has a cooling effect. Dense foliage over busy roads is not beneficial, since the emissions from the vehicles tend to become trapped under the foliage. The right type of tree and the right shape of tree top can help prevent pollutants from accumulating. The type of tree should be chosen to suit the local moisture system.
