In urban areas where there is often no space for retention at ground level, possibilities for subsurface water retention can be explored, on the condition that the soil is suitable. With this retention form, water is let into the aquiferous layer during wet periods and can be extracted during dry periods Arnold, 2011. This method is already used in the Westland area of the Netherlands by horticulturalists.
