In the United States, cool roofs have been in use for 20 years. Traditional roofs there can reach temperatures of up to 85°C in summer months, while cool roofs stay 28-33°C cooler. Special roofing materials, foils, tiles and metals with special coatings have been developed. These roofing materials have recently found their way to the European market, for example light foils and light synthetic tiles to replace gravel as ballast [EPA, 2008].
