Trees offer many advantages to cities: under their canopies, they create space, offer coolness, produce oxygen and offer living space to many birds and insect species. Trees only have one disadvantage: they grow slowly. For this reason, it is important that existing trees are kept and protected.
It is important to find a suitable spot for a tree so it can develop its canopy fully. It is better to think well before planting a tree than to prune much afterwards. In consultation with the residents of a city, more fruit-bearing trees could also enrich the cityscape. In order to prevent irritation of urban residents, it is advisable not to place basswood (linden) near parking places or benches, as basswood trees are often in habited by aphids, whose sugar production may soil cars and benches.
